A hotel night in France carries one of the lowest official footprints of any country DESNZ publishes — the live per-room-night figure is below. The reason is upstream: France generates most of its electricity from nuclear plants, so the power that heats, cools and lights a room is unusually low-carbon.
The gap to other destinations is large enough to matter in a travel footprint: a week in a French hotel emits well under half of what the same week costs in a US hotel, around half a German one, and roughly a tenth of some Gulf destinations on the official figures.
