Mexico Stoves Project
“A healthy home for all” – Utsil Naj
Mexico Stoves Project
For the past few decades, climate change has impacted many rural communities in Mexico. Particularly, hurricanes and floods have caused significant damages to many small farming communities, which are already especially vulnerable as their crops are a source of income and, in many cases, subsistence for their families.
As an added pressure, a significant proportion of the same population still cooks on open stoves with biomass. It is estimated that in Mexico alone, over 5 million people cooking with firewood. As a result, families have to cut more trees, use more firewood and produce more smoke every time they need to cook. This has a huge impact on the environment and their health.
The Utsil Naj project in Mexico aims at addressing these challenges in an innovative way. Switching to improved cookstoves (ICS) reduces the use of firewood and lowers carbon emissions, all while expelling the toxic fumes outside the users’ homes. This decreases indoor air pollution dramatically and contributes to forests and biodiversity preservation. With this solution, rural families in Mexico can improve their health, prevent deforestation and participate in the global fight against climate change.

The project is certified by the prestigius Gold standerd. Its impacts on our communities and our planet are carefully measerd and reported as contributions to achieving the sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) defined by United Nations(UN). The indicators shown above are taken from the last verification of the project from the period 2015-2018.
IMPACTS AND PROJECT BENEFITS
In addition to the environmental impacts generated by the project, utsil naj has a profound social and economic impact on the life of each beneficiary.
This is particularly important in Mexico, where communities face the added challenge of lack of access to clean water. Boiling water becomes essential in these conditions. For them, an improved cookstove represents a way to improve their overall quality of life. This is why it is important to improve their access to efficient cooking solutions.
Revenues from the carbon credit sales are entirely reinvested in our projects. Microsol commits 100% of carbon credits sales to make sure all of our projects are maintained over time. This includes monitoring and maintenance activities, and eventually the inclusion of new families into the project so more can enjoy the benefits of these solutions.
